To All My Fellow SACE Friends:
Everyday I see people drive to work and it is obvious to me that they hate their jobs.
I can see it in their grey dead eyes. It is sad : they know NOTHING about the value of life.
I call Knowing about LIFE : The Gift of Knowing.
But most employees THINK they understand what the: Gift of Knowing is – but the reality is, they don’t.
Most successful entrepreneurs know this – and they learned it in the school of hard knocks.
Most would-be entrepreneurs wish they knew this….
So let me explain to you what I personally think what the Gift of Knowing is, because in the end, it is okay if it means different things to different people.
YOU NEED TO DECIDE WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU!
ONE: It starts with the power of the mind
“As a man thinks, so he becomes”
“You become what you think about”
TWO: Lets Look At The True Cold Facts And The Reality If You Work For Someone Else
Do THIS calculation right now.
What is the amount of paydays the average employee would have during his working life?
Let’s say his working life is form age 20-60.
The calculation: 40 years x 12 months = 480 months (paydays)
Did you get that?
It’s MADNESS; for me it is unthinkable that anyone can measure his or her life in 480 paydays.
Imagine that – there are only 480 paydays during the average employees working life. Not that many at all if you consider that most people will live until the age of 80-90 years.
BUT HERE IS THE THING…
As the owners of your own business, you can have as many paydays as you want – you can even pay yourself every day. No need to wait 30 days to receive your salary.
It gets worse for employees: If we now calculate a “take home pay“ (lets just take a very low average amount) of say R10 000 per month, we find that the average employee can only earn R4, 8 million during his entire life time; regardless of how hard he works (ignore inflation, tax, promotion, etc. to simplify the calculation).
At first this figure may sound high, but consider the following:
The average employee will have expenses (House, car, insurance, education, holidays, food and other groceries) of R6-7 million during the 20-year period.
This is a shortfall of around R2 million!
This “monthly salary thing” really boils down to economic slavery and is designed to keep you permanently in debt. You may ask how do we cope with this shortfall?
Mainly through financing (loans and bonds) as well as cutting back on expenses (juggling the household budget). Either way, it is obviously not a satisfactory situation.
THREE: Do you want to do better than this?
Naturally, everyone with a dream wants to do better than this!! And we all need a dream to survive.
How can we rectify this situation?
The simple answer is: The only option is to start your own business!
And that is why the SA Chamber of Entrepreneurs is here; to show you the way!
FOUR: Realities of employment in South Africa
We constantly hear about the doom and gloom of the employment situation in our country. Is it really that bad? Let us consider some facts:
1. Fact – only 7% of school leavers get taken up into the formal job market.
2. Fact – most large companies retrench people (down size), in hundreds and thousands.
3. Fact – unemployment figures are currently sitting at around 35%, that means that one out of every three people is unemployed!
4. Fact – having a tertiary qualification or work experience is no guarantee of getting a job.
5. Fact – many retrenched people are never able to return to the formal job market.
6. Fact – many illegal immigrants in our country compete against South African citizens, often at much lower salaries.
Now that we are all negative, what can be done about the current state of affairs?
The only option : Buy or start your own business!
FIVE: Our personal dreams
We all have dreams. Some of us dream about a new car, some dream about owning a house, some dream about having exotic holidays on a tropical island.
Once you have these things, you want more. Maybe the new car is not enough, and now we want a sports car. After buying your own home, you might want a holiday house at the coast. Humans always want more, and better. Dreams help us to keep on going. They give us a reason to work harder and earn more.
The question is: Can hard work alone generate enough money to allow us to keep up with our dreams? If you work for a salary, the answer to this is probably: No.
Make your dreams come true
Most people only dream of starting their own business and unfortunately it remains only a dream. These people go to their graves without ever knowing whether their dreams could have been turned into reality!
NOW : Answer this question…at your funeral would you like them to say, “He lived out his dreams or he had dreams!”
Nobody has ever said it is easy to start or run your own business, however, recently Forbes magazine reported that 72% of the 400 richest people in America got rich by starting their own businesses.
SIX: To do this you need Guts, Power and Courage! (GPC)
Losers are like spectators, they criticise everyone and everything. They say things like “if only “ and “I wish”. They also say “one day when my ship sails in“… meanwhile they have no idea where it is.
WINNERS VERSUS LOSERS
The Winner is always a part of the answer,
The Loser is always a part of the problem.
The Winner always has a program;
The Loser always has an excuse.
The Winner says, “Let me do it for you;”
The Loser says, “That’s not my job.”
The Winner sees an answer for every problem;
The Loser sees a problem in every answer.
The Winner says, “It may be difficult but it’s possible;”
The Loser says, “It may be possible but it’s too difficult.”
Winners are powerful; they know where they want to go and how to get there. They possess the ability to act, they have Guts, Power, and Courage… they have GPC.
SEVEN: Do you have GPC?
Let me give you the definitions for Guts, Power and Courage.
The dictionary definitions are as follows:
Power: “The ability to act”.
Guts: “Courage and determination to do something difficult”
Courage: “Ability to control fear”
TIP: Write the letters GPC (and words) on a index card and keep it with you for the next month….
Look at it often and just ask yourself ONE question. Do I Have GPC?
I want to share the following quote with you before I close this letter and my understanding of the Gift of Knowing:
“Every morning in Africa, a Springbok wakes up. It knows that it must run faster than the fastest Lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Springbok or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Lion or a Springbok, it doesn’t matter whether you have an established business or an idea for starting a business. When the sun comes up you better be running!”
TAKE THIS HOME….
Believe In Yourself For Your OWN Success
Do you believe that you are able to do anything you put your mind to? Are you aware that anything that you can think about or dream about, you have the power within you to achieve it? If you did not have the ability to achieve it, your mind would not be able to conceive of it. If there is something that you want to, but have been afraid to start, take baby steps if you have to, but start now.
Look at every change as an opportunity for growth. Every time you make the smallest change in your life you have the chance to grow and succeed in ways you never thought possible. Let go of old beliefs and replace them with new ones.
Most every belief you have has been programmed into your subconscious mind throughout your life by the way others treat you, or the way you allow others to treat you.
It is up to you to form a new belief system and convince your subconscious mind that these things are true.
